I sent a friend of mine the article in Huffington Post about Big Boob Problems. She responds with…

Women really need to embrace their bodies and stop complaining about them all the time. You NEVER hear guys bitching over the size of their bellies, or their legs….

EXCUSE ME? Problems that come with having (very) large breasts isn’t about being comfortable with your body. It’s about so much more than that.

- Back pain

- Spending more $$ on proper bras

- Sports Bra? Please.

- Can’t buy a standard swimsuit that fits both upper & lower

- Cute tanks? Ha, not going to happen

- People not taking you seriously, seen as “slutty”

- Having to divert attention from your chest to your face

The list could go on. Don’t get me wrong, I do like my boobs, but holy hell can they ever be a pain at times. So don’t you dare tell me, miss small B cup who freaks out and hits the gym for 3 hours if you gain 3 pounds, to just “love what I’ve got”. You have no idea what it’s like.

I want you to stop and think about something. This is a picture of another planet. Where this robot is. Right now.

As we sit here on Earth in this or any moment, we each have in our heads a flurry of worries and questions and ideas. And most of them pertain to our own lives. That’s okay, it’s human nature. We are each the center of our own universe.

I often think about this in crowded places, like while in traffic, as the place I’m going is far more important than the place all of these other people are going. I’m convinced that they feel the same way. And so we sit.

But that means that there are seven billion mental universes walking around on this planet. We are staring into them through little digital windows that we carry in our hands, and certain that this decision is the most important decision. Everything that is happening is happening to us.

Yet for the past eight years, there has been a dusty, six-wheeled rover crawling around the surface of Mars, completely alone. Incidentally, that rover has exceeded its expected mission of 90 days by thirty-two times over. That’s admirable, and I can’t help but personify the little guy. Like a sort of scrappy, diligent explorer, quietly working hard for the benefit of someone else. “No complaints, boss!” Like Johnny 5 meets Wall-E.

And so we get images like this, reminding us that every day we can look beyond our personal universe. What a thought! Look at how much is out there. Think of what else we could see! Let’s go.

I sometimes go into a weird place in my head when I start thinking about things like this. Like the vastness of space and how small we really are. More than once I’ve started to have troubles breathing I am so overwhelmed by it all.

Ethan Zuckerman offers an innovative idea to quantify attention paid to various things on the internet. The unit of measure? The amount of attention Kim Kardashian gets in one day. As he explains:

The Kardashian mentions how much attention is paid, not how much attention is deserved, so naming the unit after someone who is famous for being famous seems appropriate. Should the unit be adopted, I would hope that future scholars will calculate Kardashians using whatever public figure is appropriate at the time for being inappropriately famous.

So how do things size up in Kardashians? Angelina Jolie gets about 0.35 Kardashians, The Kony 2012 campaign peaked at 7.7 Kardashians, but now sits at a paltry 5 centiKardashians.

As for me? Searches for this blog are registering no higher than the nanoKardashian range. And searches for my name are mostly people misspelling “Scarlett Johansson”. You gotta start somewhere!
